Notify Us of a Death

Tell Us Once is a service offered by more than 90% of local authorities on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The service allows the bereaved person to inform central and local government services of the death at one time rather than having to write, telephone or even attend each authority individually. The Tell Us Once service can save you a great deal of time and effort.

You will be offered the opportunity to complete the notification at the same time as registering the death. Alternatively, the registrar can provide you with a unique reference number which you can use to complete the notification online or over the telephone.

A list of local authorities that do not offer the Tell Us Once service can be found here. If an individual lives in one of these boroughs, you will still need to inform the Fund of their death.

How does this work in the Local Government Pension Scheme?

When an individual uses Tell Us Once, a search is done in real time for any pension record, and the person completing the form will get a message confirming if a successful match has been found.

Where a match is found the pension fund will receive a formal notification of the death including the next of kin details.

If no match is found, the person using Tell Us Once will be informed. This does not necessarily mean the person didn't have a pension in the LGPS and it is best to contact the pension fund directly to inform them of the death.

Once the Fund receives notification of a death through the Tell Us Once service, we will write to the person named in the notification with the next steps.

In some instances, the Tell Us Once service can be used if an individual was living overseas at the time of their death. For more information about using the service in these circumstances please click here.

If you would prefer to contact the Fund direct to notify us of your bereavement, please call our customer services team on 0300 111 1665 or email pensionfundenquiries@wolverhampton.gov.uk
